AMD exec says just buy cheaper CPUs if RAM prices hurt

Okay so I saw this comment from AMD and had to share because honestly, it's pretty tone-deaf. When asked about the current memory shortage that's driving RAM prices through the roof, a senior AMD executive basically shrugged and said consumers should just buy cheaper CPUs instead.

I get it, AMD has processors from $99 budget chips all the way up to $999 threadrippers. That's great and all. But here's the thing - if someone's building a gaming rig or workstation in 2026, they've probably already picked their CPU based on what they actually need to do with it. Telling them to downgrade because RAM costs too much is like telling someone who needs a truck to buy a compact car because gas prices went up.

What really gets me is that this completely misses the point. The memory shortage is hitting everyone hard right now. DDR5 prices have jumped 40% since November, and even older DDR4 kits are getting pricey. For builders on a budget, that extra $50-100 for RAM can absolutely wreck their plans. And suggesting they save money by getting a weaker processor? That's not a solution, that's just shuffling the compromise around.

Look, I've tested plenty of budget builds, and there's definitely value in AMD's cheaper Ryzen 5000 series chips. But when someone's already stretching their budget and RAM prices spike, the answer isn't "just get a worse CPU." The real answer would be AMD working with memory manufacturers to increase supply or maybe bundling some RAM deals with their processors. You know, actually helping consumers instead of telling them to lower their expectations.
