Here's what went down. AMD's graphics team basically laid it out straight - the AI 400 series was already deep in development when RDNA 4 was finalized. These chips have been in the oven for over 18 months, and changing the GPU architecture mid-flight would've pushed everything back to late 2027. Not exactly ideal when you're trying to compete with Intel and Nvidia right now.

But honestly? The existing RDNA 3.5 graphics in the AI 400 are still pretty solid for what most people need. What really caught my attention was their FSR Redstone demo. This new upscaling tech works with ANY graphics - RDNA 3, RDNA 4, even Intel Arc if you're into that. They showed it running on an AI 400 laptop and the performance bump was legit impressive. Like, 40 to 60 fps jump in Cyberpunk 2077 impressive.

Bottom line? Yeah, it's weird that AMD's newest processors don't have their newest graphics. But after seeing what these chips can actually do, I'm thinking most buyers won't even notice. The RDNA 4 discrete cards are where the real graphics action is anyway.
