Big Tech Gets a Pass on AI Chip Tariffs While We Pay More
So apparently Amazon, Google, and Microsoft might dodge import taxes on TSMC chips. Meanwhile, your next GPU is about to cost even more.

Okay so I saw this deal and had to share... except it's not really a deal for us regular folks. Word is the White House is cooking up a special exemption that would let the biggest tech companies skip tariffs on AI chips from Taiwan. Yeah, you read that right.
Here's what's happening. Companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft — you know, the ones burning through billions on AI infrastructure — might get to import their fancy TSMC chips without paying import duties. The rest of us? We're still looking at price hikes on everything from graphics cards to smartphones. Because of course we are.
Look, I get why they're doing this. These hyperscalers (that's what they call the big cloud companies now) are basically keeping the AI race competitive with China. And TSMC makes the best chips on the planet right now — there's no getting around that. But man, it stings watching regular consumers get hit with higher prices while trillion-dollar companies catch a break.
What really gets me is the timing. We're already seeing GPU prices creep up again after finally getting somewhat reasonable in late 2025. Now small businesses trying to build their own AI systems or gamers wanting a decent graphics card are gonna pay the tariff tax while AWS gets a free pass? Come on.
The worst part? This probably makes sense from a national competitiveness standpoint. But that doesn't make it any easier to swallow when you're shopping for tech in 2026 and everything costs 20% more than it should.
