MediaTek just dropped Wi-Fi 8 chips and I'm actually excited

Okay so I saw MediaTek's new Filogic 8000 chips at CES 2026 and honestly? This is the first time I've been genuinely pumped about Wi-Fi tech in years. Wi-Fi 8 is coming later this year, and MediaTek's jumping in early with actual silicon.

Here's why this matters. Wi-Fi has been pretty boring since around 2015. Sure, we got faster speeds with Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, but your Netflix still buffers when your partner fires up a Zoom call, right? The Filogic 8000 family targets exactly this problem. Instead of just pushing bigger numbers, Wi-Fi 8 focuses on making your network actually work when everyone's streaming, gaming, and video calling at once.

MediaTek being first out the gate is interesting too. Usually Qualcomm or Broadcom grab the headlines, but MediaTek's been quietly killing it in the router chip game. Their current Wi-Fi 7 stuff powers a ton of mesh systems that actually work. So when they say these new chips will ship in routers by late 2026, I believe them.

The real test? Price. Wi-Fi 7 routers still cost stupid money - like $400 for anything decent. If MediaTek can get Wi-Fi 8 into sub-$200 routers by early 2027, this could actually matter for normal people. Otherwise it's just another spec bump for tech nerds to argue about.
