Okay so I saw this deal and had to share because the numbers are absolutely bonkers. Meta just locked down nuclear power contracts totaling 6 gigawatts. To put that in perspective, that's enough electricity to power literally every home in New York City. Twice.
Here's what's actually happening. Meta needs 1 gigawatt for their Prometheus data center that goes online this year, and another 5 gigawatts for something called Hyperion that launches in 2028. These aren't your typical server farms - we're talking about massive AI training facilities that suck down power like nothing I've ever seen tested.
The nuclear angle is what really gets me. While everyone else is scrambling for renewable energy deals, Meta basically said screw it and went straight for the most reliable, always-on power source they could find. Smart move honestly. Solar and wind are great but when you need consistent power for AI models that cost millions to train, you can't risk a cloudy week shutting down operations.
What strikes me is how this changes the whole data center game. We used to worry about cooling and square footage. Now it's all about securing massive power contracts years in advance. And at this scale? Small cities use less electricity than what Meta's planning. Makes you wonder what they're building that needs that much juice.
