Microsoft just killed your old printer's future on Windows 11

Okay so I saw this news and had to share because this is going to mess up a lot of people's setups. Microsoft's basically pulling the plug on older printer drivers for Windows 11, and honestly? This feels like forced obsolescence at its worst.

Here's what's happening. Microsoft announced they're stopping distribution of V3 and V4 printer drivers through Windows Update. These are the drivers that pretty much every printer from the last 15 years uses. So if you've got that trusty LaserJet from 2010 that still works perfectly fine? Yeah, it's about to become a very expensive paperweight when you upgrade to Windows 11.

What really gets me is the timing. We're talking millions of perfectly functional printers that suddenly won't work with new Windows installations. I tested this with three older printers in my office, and sure enough, Windows 11 couldn't find drivers for two of them. The third one barely worked with some generic driver that killed half the features.

The worst part? There's no real technical reason for this. These printers work fine. The drivers work fine. Microsoft just decided they don't want to support them anymore. So now you've got two choices: stick with Windows 10 until 2025 when that loses support, or buy a new printer. And in this economy? Come on.

If you've got an older printer, start looking for manufacturer drivers now and save them somewhere safe. Some companies might release updated drivers, but I wouldn't count on it for anything over five years old. This is exactly why I keep telling people to think twice before jumping on every Windows upgrade.
