Okay so I saw this news about Tesla's AI chip plans and had to share my thoughts. Elon Musk just dropped a bombshell about pushing out new AI accelerators every nine months. That's way faster than Nvidia and AMD's yearly updates.
Here's the thing though. Building custom silicon isn't like updating software. You can't just move fast and break things when you're dealing with billion-dollar chip fabrication. Sure, Tesla's got deep pockets and they've already proven they can design decent chips with their FSD computer. But matching Nvidia's raw performance while also beating their release schedule? That's a tall order.
What really caught my attention is Musk claiming these will be the highest-volume AI chips in the world. I mean, every Tesla rolling off the line needs one, so the volume part makes sense. But volume doesn't automatically mean they'll be the best chips. Nvidia's H200s and upcoming Blackwell chips are absolute monsters for training AI models. Tesla's focusing more on inference for self-driving, which is a different beast entirely.
The nine-month cadence sounds aggressive but not impossible if they're doing incremental updates rather than ground-up redesigns. Apple pulls off yearly chip updates, after all. But they've been at this for over a decade. Tesla's chip team is talented but they're still relatively new to the game.
Bottom line? Competition is great for pushing the industry forward. If Tesla can actually deliver on this timeline, it'll force Nvidia and AMD to step up their game. Just don't expect Tesla's chips in your gaming rig anytime soon. These are purpose-built for one thing: making cars drive themselves.
