Romanian water systems hit by ransomware - 1,000 PCs down

Romania's national water management authority just got absolutely wrecked by ransomware - we're talking 1,000 computers knocked offline in one hit. The attackers even managed to bypass BitLocker encryption, which is usually pretty solid protection.

Here's what gets me about this whole thing. Water infrastructure is one of those systems you really don't want compromised, right? The good news is that water is still flowing normally throughout Romania. The bad news? Nobody knows who did it yet. No ransomware group has stepped up to claim responsibility, which is weird because these groups usually love the publicity.

What really caught my attention is the BitLocker angle. For those who don't know, BitLocker is Microsoft's built-in encryption tool that's supposed to protect your data even if someone steals your hard drive. But ransomware doesn't care about stealing your encrypted drive - it just encrypts everything on top of your existing encryption. Double encrypted files? Yeah, good luck with that.

This attack shows exactly why backup systems and air-gapped networks matter so much for critical infrastructure. You can have all the encryption in the world, but if someone gets admin access to your running systems, game over.
