Look, I thought I'd seen everything in tech, but this one caught me off guard. SpaceX just filed paperwork with the FCC outlining plans to launch a million satellites that would basically function as floating AI data centers. We're talking 100 gigawatts of compute power just hanging out in orbit.
Here's what gets me about this whole thing. We already have issues with space junk and overcrowded orbital paths. Starlink's got what, 6,000 satellites up there now? And that's already causing headaches for astronomers and other satellite operators. Now multiply that by 166. The logistics alone make my head spin.
But I gotta admit, the concept is wild. Instead of building massive data centers that suck up electricity and need constant cooling here on Earth, why not stick them in space where it's already freezing cold? Solar panels work better up there too. No land costs, no local regulations, no angry neighbors complaining about the noise.
The real question is whether our orbital highways can handle this kind of traffic. We're already seeing close calls between satellites happen more frequently. Adding another million objects zooming around at 17,000 mph seems... optimistic? SpaceX has proven they can launch stuff cheaply and efficiently, but managing a constellation this size is a whole different beast.
Don't get me wrong, if anyone can pull this off, it's probably SpaceX. They've already revolutionized satellite internet. But a million AI satellites? That's either the future of computing or the most expensive space debris field ever created.
