Okay so I saw this deal and had to share. Researchers at UC Irvine just dropped a wireless speed demo that makes my home internet look like it's running through a potato. We're talking 15 gigabytes per second. Not gigabits. Gigabytes.
To put that in perspective, that's about 24 times faster than the best 5G connection you can get right now. You could download an entire 4K movie in literally one second. The whole Lord of the Rings extended trilogy? About 2.5 seconds. I've waited longer for my coffee to brew.
Here's what's actually clever about this. Instead of using the traditional digital-to-analog converters that every wireless device needs, they built this silicon chip that somehow sends analog signals straight from digital data. They're using three sub-transmitters working together, which honestly sounds like some Star Trek engineering but apparently it works.
Now before you start asking when you can buy this for your phone, pump the brakes. This is still lab tech. But what gets me excited is they did this with a silicon chip, not some exotic material that costs more than my car. Silicon means it could actually make it to real products someday.
