Windows 11 just broke gaming again and Nvidia's telling us to nuke it

Okay so I saw this mess unfold yesterday and had to share. Windows 11's January update KB5074109 is absolutely wrecking gaming performance, and it's bad enough that Nvidia's officially telling people to just uninstall the thing. Not patch it. Not wait for a fix. Just get rid of it.

Here's what's happening. GeForce owners are seeing massive framerate drops - we're talking games that normally run at 144fps suddenly chugging along at 30-40fps. But that's not even the worst part. People are also reporting weird visual artifacts, screen tearing, and graphical corruption that makes some games literally unplayable. One buddy of mine said his Cyberpunk 2077 looked like someone threw it in a blender.

The fix? Super simple but kind of ridiculous that we even need it. Head to Settings, then Windows Update, click Update history, find KB5074109 in the list, and uninstall it. Takes maybe two minutes. Just remember to pause Windows updates for a bit so it doesn't reinstall itself like some kind of digital zombie.

What really gets me is this isn't the first time this has happened. Remember back in 2025 when that October update killed audio for half the planet? Or that time in early 2024 when an update made SSDs run at USB 2.0 speeds? Microsoft and Nvidia need to actually talk to each other before these updates go live. I get that Windows has to support a million different hardware configs, but come on.

For now, if you're a gamer running Windows 11 with an Nvidia card, just yank that update. Your framerates will thank you. And maybe wait a week or two before installing any new Windows updates. Let the rest of us be the guinea pigs first.
